Summer has finally arrived up here in the North Maine Woods! We’ve been enjoying a couple weeks of high temperatures and high water. The water level is almost as high as the stoke level on the Penobscot. Our guides are fired up and dialed in on these high water, class V lines. We have our brand new fleet of pointed rafts rigged up and ready for action. They’re so shiny, you have to squint if you’re looking directly at them. Maine has been serving up some incredible weather, which pairs nicely with the high water meat piles of the West Branch. The Crib is still working, Exterminator is still exterminating, and the Fluffy Box of Kittens is still hungry so, come on up! Bring your sense of adventure, trusting nature, and a get-after-it attitude. Our guides can’t wait to meet you!

That Summer Feeling

It’s finally starting to feel like summer up here in the North Maine Woods. The rain is washing away the last of the pollen and the bugs are as ferocious as ever. Our late arriving guides are all here now and guide training is almost complete. The campgrounds are filling up. The sounds of friends having fun and the smell of campfires fill the air in the evenings. Work days are just as fun as our days off. When we’re not running the river on a commercial trip, we’re still out there running the Penobscot. Our staff can’t get enough of the 24-7 whitewater the west branch provides. We’ve got some brand new boats on the way, which has all of our guides at a maximum stoke level. It’ll take a few days of work to make them River-ready, but the anticipation will be the biggest motivator for getting it done. Get on up here and help us break in the new rubber! Without folks like you getting out on the river with us, we’re just a bunch of crazy kayakers living in the woods. Come hang out with us!

Guide Training

GUIDE TRAINING (LEVEL I)

Guide training is upon us.There’s no better way to get into paddling shape than doing laps all day. Nothing like putting on that wet wetsuit from they day before and doing it all over again. The van has already developed that foul stench, that only training can brew. Our trainees are picking up on things quickly. We’re past the point of learning paddle strokes and how to strap down rafts. Now it’s their turn to get in the guide compartment and start shouting commands. So far we’ve had some good lines and some hairy lines. The river gives you instant feedback in the form of backsurfs and violent ejections. We’ve all made some sacrifices to the river gods at this point. Time to reflect and rest up for tomorrow.

The Most Wonderful Time of The Year

The most anticipated time of year is upon us. The guides have been having whitewater dreams for months. We’ve spent hours rewatching old trip videos. People catch us staring longingly at our screensavers of us surfing The Fluffy Box of Kittens. Skiing is fun, but there’s no substitute for the beefy whitewater, only the West Branch of the Penobscot can provide. Now it’s time to dust off the rafts and start all over! We’re gearing up for another amazing season. The ice is mostly gone at this point and The Golden Road has been graded. We’ve been enjoying roughly three weeks of high water releases. Ten foot tall waves and whitewater grenades exploding all around you. It’s the perfect way to get the season started. There’s no better way for a guide to get in shape, after a long winter than guide training. It’s right around the corner and we can’t wait to get our prospective trainees on the water. It will be an intense couple weeks, but there’s nothing we’d rather be doing. Unlimited amounts of excitement await for those who come rafting with us. Your stoke dealers are waiting for you. Lookout Cabin is a Premium Rental Cabin at NEOC. Lookout has views over the resort and onto Mount Katahdin. This unit sleeps 7-12 people and has 3 bedrooms with a total of 5 queen and 2 twin beds, 2 1/2 baths and an open concept kitchen and living space equipped with satellite TV. The Bedrooms are large and spacious and there is an outdoor wraparound deck on the first floor, that makes for an excellent place to spend the evening, gazing at the stars or grilling out. TROUT MOUNTAIN #12

Trout Mountain rental cabin is located in the center of the resort and features great views of Katahdin, Maine’s highest mountain. The cabin features stunning woodwork and comes completely furnished with leather furniture, 2 bathrooms, a modern kitchen and large dining area and living space with satellite TV. There are three private bedrooms, and 2 baths. Two of the bedrooms are in their own separate wing, allowing for privacy with a large group. Guides Cabin is one of the older cabins on the property, and is also the most popular! It is located in the heart of the resort. Guides has a wood burning stove, 2 private bedrooms (with 1 full bed in each), and 2 walk-through bedrooms: One with a Twin Bed, one with a Full-Sized Bed – on the first floor floor. Upstairs has an alcove bedroom with 2 single beds. The entire cabin sleeps 9 people total. It is rustic and has undergone some renovations in recent years. Additionally inside of the cabin is 2 bathrooms, a full kitchen, and living room area.

SANDY STREAM #17

Sandy Stream Cabin is for larger groups or multiple families.
